A Beautiful Nightmare

As many of you know by now, the world we’ve grown to love, and sometimes hate, has dramatically changed. The rambunctious, inconceivable and horrendous virus of COVID-19 has brought the world to its knees. Its widespread contagion has forced schools, businesses and states to unanimously close its doors.

The Coronavirus, or better known as the Rona, has wreaked havoc on people’s health, finances and overall livelihood. The abandoned highways and empty dining halls are a somber realization that our temporary reality is right out of a scene of I Am Legend.

However, as bad as things are, I can’t help but notice what Beyoncé described as: a beautiful nightmare.

For the first time in my lifetime, I am witnessing our world come together as one. In our hustle, bustle and capitalist society, I am witnessing people be forced to push the pause button. This moment of social distancing has allowed: families to spend more time together, mend marriages, sleep, meditate, Binge watch All American and create that blog you’ve always talked about. *wink*

Another beautiful component to this nightmare is the realization that we need each other to survive. These unsung heroes are divine illustrations of what selflessness looks like:

  • Janitors and sanitation workers
  • Transit workers
  • Postal workers
  • Warehouse and shipping workers
  • Doctors, nurses and medical staff
  • Restaurant, grocery and food delivery employees

You ladies and gentlemen are the REAL MVPS!

This experience has been humbling and has taught me 2 important things: 1) It’s okay to take a break and spend time with those that matter the most, and 2) As much as I can appreciate the introverted aspects of my personality, human connection is necessary. Not only is it necessary, it’s essential to our mental stability. People weren’t created to social distance themselves from one another. We thrive better when we are allowed to fellowship as a collective.

“Alone we can do so little; Together we can do so much.”Helen Keller

This entire situation has undoubtedly brought us closer as a planet. The Rona has exposed the illusion of separation and precluded the theoretical stance of social Darwinism. This beautiful nightmare has become the greatest teaching of what every spiritual guru has articulated throughout the centuries: We are one.
